LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) surgery is the most popular and successful vision correction procedure in the world. It is a permanent procedure used to improve a person’s vision quality and eliminate his or her dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
LASIK is a fast, outpatient procedure performed while you are awake and lying flat on a surgical laserbed. At LasikPRO, before the procedure begins you will be offered a mild sedative and special anesthetic drops will be added to numb the eyes and ensure comfort. LASIK eye surgery is performed in three steps:
Step 1: Your eye will be gently immobilized so there will be no movement during the procedure. Next, a very thin flap is created to expose the underlying cornea, and is carefully lifted like the page of a book.
Step 2:: Using a cool-beam excimer laser that has been individually programmed and double-verified with your exact eye measurements and an electronic mapping of your eye, your cornea is reshaped to optimize vision.
After the laser eye surgery you will need someone to drive you home for safety reasons. Once home, it is best for you to rest or sleep for the first few hours, or for as long as Dr. Perraut recommends. To help your corneal flap heal properly, it is important to avoid rubbing your eyes. For the rest of the day, you should avoid reading, computer work, television and any strenuous exercise. You will be instructed to moisturize your eyes with preservative-free tears and will need to wear protective eyewear, such as the sunglasses we give you, for as long as is instructed.
It is very important that you return to us or your regular eye doctor for the recommended follow-up exams to ensure that your eyes are healing correctly. Most patients will notice a big difference in their vision as well as experience a speedy recovery. You should be able to return to ordinary, non-contact physical activities, including driving, on the day after your laser eye surgery!
A dramatic improvement in your vision may be expected immediately following your LASIK surgery. Each morning for the next week following your procedure, you will open your eyes and notice a remarkable difference in your vision quality.
In a small percentage of cases, you may desire further improvement in your vision, or need a “tune-up” in coming years. Dr. Perraut offers FREE Enhancements for at least a year once your vision is stabilized, to achieve and maintain your 20/Happy vision. There are a wide variety of expensive, high-tech cameras on the market today, but did you know that not even one of them comes close to the visual clarity recorded by your very own eyes? Let’s take a better look at how your eye works and why it is important to invest in good vision…
The cornea is the transparent dome-shaped front of the eye that covers and protects the delicate, colored iris. In addition to providing protection, the cornea plays a large part in giving us clear, focused vision.
Vision begins when light rays are reflected off an object and enter the eyes through the cornea. The cornea bends or refracts the rays that pass through a round hole called the pupil. The iris, or colored portion of the eye that surrounds the pupil, opens and closes (making the pupil larger or smaller) to regulate the amount of light passing through. The light rays then pass through the lens, which actually changes shape so it can further bend the rays and focus them on the retina at the back of the eye. Now when it comes to bending light, the camera and our eye function almost identically; however, recording this visual material is an entirely different matter.
While cameras use film to capture an image, our retinas are far more sophisticated tools for interpreting light. The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye. This tissue contains millions of tiny light-sensing nerve cells called rods and cones, which are named for their distinct shapes. The cones are concentrated in the center of the retina, in an area called the macula. In bright light conditions, cones provide clear, sharp central vision and detect colors and fine details. Rods are located outside the macula and extend all the way to the outer edge of the retina. They provide peripheral or side vision. Rods also allow the eyes to detect motion and help us see in dim light and at night. These cells in the retina convert the light into electrical impulses. The optic nerve sends these impulses to the brain where an image is produced.
Shape – Bringing the Issue of Blurry Vision into Focus
Most cases of blurred vision are caused by errors of refraction. In other words, the light passing through your cornea is not properly bent (refracted) to provide you with the clearest image. If we need to wear glasses or contact lenses to see clearly, this basically means that the shapes (or “curvatures”) of our corneas are incorrect. Sometimes these curvatures are too pointed (“steep”), producing nearsightedness, or other times not pointed enough (“flat”), producing farsightedness. Nearsightedness (or “myopia”) causes close objects to be in focus and distant objects to be blurred. Farsightedness (or “hyperopia”) causes distant objects to be easier to focus than close objects, but may not be a problem until age 40 or 50 years.
In other cases, a person’s cornea may be more curved in one direction; this asymmetrical curvature is known as astigmatism. For example an eye might have a steeper curve vertically than in the opposite (horizontal) direction. Think of the shape of a teaspoon. This is a classic example of an astigmatic shape. If you were to look at the back of a teaspoon, held in front of your face with the handle parallel to the floor, you would see that the vertical curvature is more pointed than the horizontal curvature. If your corneas were shaped similarly to this example, your astigmatism would prevent you from clearly seeing both the horizontal top bar and the vertical middle bar of the letter “T” at the same time. Astigmatism usually occurs along with nearsightedness or farsightedness.
